PlanetServer, the Planetary Service of the recently completed EC FP7 e-infrastructure project EarthServer (http://earthserver.eu) (Rossi et al, 2014; Baumann et al., 2015) is a state-of-art online data exploration and analysis system based on the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standards. It concentrates on Mars imagery and hyperspectral (MRO CRISM) data (Oosthoek et al., 2014) and also comprises subsurface sounding data from MEX MARSIS (Cantini et al., 2014).
EarthServer and PlanetServer are based on the rasdaman array database (e.g. Baumann et al., 2015). Data, either ingested or referenced, can be queried using SQL-like syntax. OGC-compatible interfaces can be provided, e.g. though direct subsetting on the server through the Web Coverage Service (WCS) standard. More flexible, powerful and bandwidth-saving data access is provided by the Web Coverage Processing Service (WCPS) standard, capable of complex queries, e.g. enabling calculations over images, multispectral and hyperspectral cubes.
Its evolution under H2020 will expand both the underlying technology and, the clients and the range and sized of served datasets (e.g. including multiple Solar System bodies).
PlanetServer clients and server-side ingestion scripts and tools are available as Open Source on github.com/planetserver. Its future developments will also follow the same path.
